Published on November 12, 2019, a group of teachers from Yatta subcounty in Machakos have expressed their discontent with senior Knut officials, citing mismanagement of funds and embezzlement of money meant for teachers.

According to the teachers, the branch's burial benevolent fund has collapsed, leaving them unable to bury their family members. This is in stark contrast to other sub-branches across the country, where the fund is reportedly running smoothly.

Education stakeholders in Yatta have accused the union leaders of siphoning off funds meant for teachers and investing in private property. It is alleged that branch executive secretary Kasimba Ngui is setting up a private school in Yatta, while treasurer Munyao Mbondo is putting up residential houses in Matuu.

The teachers have also raised concerns over the union's bus, which was bought by members but is now being hired out on a weekly basis for a cost of Sh40,000. The accounts remain dry, and no explanation is given during annual general meetings.

KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion has been at the center of a recent controversy, with some officials backing his removal as national executive secretary. However, the courts issued an injunction reinstating Sossion as the boss, thwarting the efforts of those seeking to remove him.

Both Kasimba and Mbondo have blamed Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i for interfering with Knut matters, claiming that he uses his younger brother, the national treasurer at Knut, to help Sossion and curtail their efforts.
