On November 11, 2019, students from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) were allegedly assaulted by members of the National Police Service while protesting against crime and insecurity around the university.
The students had blocked the Thika Superhighway in protest when they were caught on camera being assaulted.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since launched an investigation into the allegations of police brutality.
According to IPOA, the investigation will focus on the use of force, use of firearms, and any other misconduct by the police officers involved.
IPOA has dispatched its Rapid Response Unit to investigate the claims and has assured that the investigation will be impartial, fair, and independent.
The Authority has also appealed to eye witnesses to provide any related information to its investigating officers.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang'i has pledged to support the investigations and recommendations.
IPOA expressed its disappointment towards the unprofessional manner in which police officers handled the matter.
