On November 12, 2019, a disturbing video surfaced online showing police officers brutally beating a JKUAT student who was already subdued.
The incident occurred when police responded to restore order after riotous students blocked the Thika Superhighway, harassing motorists and road users.
Inspector General Hilary N. Mutyambai has since vowed to get to the bottom of the matter, stating that any police officer found culpable will be held accountable.
According to a press release from the Office of the Inspector General, National Police Service, the Internal Affairs Unit has been directed to commence investigations and make recommendations for action within 24 hours.
Officers are reminded that police action should focus on maintaining law and order and processing offenders for court, rather than being punitive.
The Inspector General's statement comes after widespread outrage over the police's handling of the JKUAT demonstration.
