Published on November 12, 2019, Harambee Starlets' dreams of qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were dashed after losing 1-0 to Zambia's Shepolopolo in the penultimate round of the qualifying tournament.
The match, played at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka, saw Zambia's Lushomo Mweemba score the winning goal in the second half, securing a 3-2 aggregate win for the Zambian team.
Kenya had gone into the match needing a high-scoring draw or a win to progress to the final round, but their hopes were crushed when Mweemba scored in the 87th minute, and Ruth Ingosi was sent off for a second bookable offense.
With the victory, Zambia has secured a spot in the final round, where they will face the winner of the match between Cameroon and Cote d'Ivoire in Yaoundé. The winner of the final round will directly qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, while the loser will face off against Chile in the inter-confederation playoffs.
