November 11, 2019 - A humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Tana River County, Kenya, as devastating floods caused by heavy rainfall have cut off several villages from the rest of the county.
The situation is dire, with several villages inaccessible for two months due to impassable roads, leaving residents struggling to access basic necessities like food and supplies.
Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa has deployed an emergency team to repair key infrastructure and provide relief to affected families.
Speaking in Majengo town, CS Wamalwa noted that the team is working to repair key infrastructure destroyed by floods and assist affected families to receive essential services.
Tana River County Commissioner Oning'oi Ole Socio emphasized the need for permanent structures that can withstand floods, stating that the design of the ridge and roads ruined by the raging waters will require an expert to assess and build.
The residents of Tana River, led by Reuben Kolana, have disclosed that the floods have rendered all roads impassable for two months, leaving them cut off from the rest of the county and struggling to access nearby markets for supplies.
