On November 7, 2019, the Retail Trade Association of Kenya (RETRAK) informed Carrefour of an investigation into bad maize flour in the market.

However, Carrefour claims it had planned a promotion for Dola flour, one of the brands recalled due to high levels of aflatoxin, weeks before receiving the notification.

The promotion, which ran from November 1 to November 3, 2019, involved a half-price offer on Dola flour.

Carrefour stated that it took immediate action to withdraw all maize flour mentioned in a list by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) from its shelves.

The supermarket has offered to refund all customers who purchased the contaminated flour, asking them to visit any branch with receipts or proof of purchase.

Carrefour's statement reads, 'We also would like to emphasize to our valuable customers that any maize flour concerned which has been purchased at Carrefour can be returned and refunded in any of our branches.'
