On November 11, 2019, the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) was closed indefinitely after a peaceful student demonstration turned chaotic.
The students had planned a peaceful protest outside the institution, but the situation quickly escalated into running battles between the students and the police.
Heavily armed police officers deployed in the area teargassed the students as they chased them away.
The students, who accused the police of laxity in taming criminals, pelted stones at anything in close proximity, including cars and buildings.
They also barricaded the roads leading to the university while harassing motorbike riders operating near the institution.
The university's corporate communication officer, Dr. Hindzano Ngonyo, stated that the school was closed following student agitation over reports of insecurity outside the University campus in Juja.
