Health services in Nairobi County are on the verge of collapse after the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers and the Kenya National Union of Nurses announced a strike set to begin on Tuesday.
The unions are blaming the Nairobi County government for ignoring their plight, despite engaging in negotiations, and for allegedly failing to implement a 2019 executive order by Governor Mike Sonko to promote and pay medical officers.
According to the unions, the county service board has yet to implement the order, despite the county assembly passing a budget to pay outstanding allowances.
Over 83 medical facilities within Nairobi County are expected to be affected by the strike, which is set to disrupt health services in the city's county hospitals.
The health workers claim they have suffered immensely since the health sector was devolved, with no promotions unlike their counterparts in other counties.
They are demanding that the county government address their grievances and implement the executive order to promote and pay medical officers.
