On Sunday evening, Mumias West Sub-County Police Commander Peter Kattam received a tip-off from a customer at a local hotel, leading to a raid that resulted in the arrest of two women.
The suspects, aged 24 and 27, were found in a room with 504 dark papers of the new Sh1000 currency denomination, which were already trimmed with images of Sh1,000.
According to Kattam, the women were residents of Ruai in Nairobi and had spent two days at the hotel, claiming they were on transit back to the city.
However, the police boss said investigations were ongoing to dismantle the cartel engaging in making fake currency in the area.
Elsewhere in Mumias East sub-county, police are holding one male suspect for allegedly defiling a minor at Matawa market.
The suspect, Hassan Ochieng, 47, was rescued from a mob after residents found him in the act with the four-year-old girl.
Residents said they saw the suspect entering his house with the neighbor's child, prompting their intervention.
Mumias East Police Commander Joseph Ongaya said the suspect was held at Shianda police station pending a medical report from the hospital before being arraigned.
