On Monday, November 11, 2019, a tense standoff unfolded at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in Juja, as protesting students clashed with police and local residents.

According to eyewitnesses, the students had blocked the Thika Superhighway to protest rising insecurity around the campus, but their peaceful demonstration quickly turned chaotic.

Locals, who had initially been sympathetic to the students' cause, soon joined forces with the police to drive the students out of the institution and its surroundings.

“Things became uglier when locals joined the police and started beating up the students,” said Amos Wafula, a student who witnessed the events.

By 1pm, no students were left inside the institution's compound, with many reporting injuries sustained during the confrontation.
