On November 13th, 2019, a civil appeal case will be heard at the High Court, with John Githongo, former anti-corruption czar, appealing a Ksh27 million defamation award to Chris Ndarathi Murungaru, former Internal Security Minister.

Published on November 11th, 2019, this case stems from a 2006 defamation case where Githongo was sued by Murungaru for linking him to corruption.

On May 1st, 2019, Justice Joseph Sergon presided over the case and ruled in favor of Murungaru, ordering Githongo to pay Ksh27 million in damages.

Githongo had previously exposed the Anglo-leasing scandal in 2002, where Kenyans lost over Ksh50 billion ($600 million) in public funds.

On January 22nd, 2006, Githongo named Murungaru, along with three other politicians, as being involved in the Anglo Leasing scams.

Following the exposure, Githongo faced threats to his life and was forced to flee Kenya in 2005, returning in 2008.
