On November 6, 2019, three police officers were killed by armed assailants at Jaldesa in Marsabit County, while 10 herders were also murdered and hundreds of cattle stolen.
Police have now recovered the three stolen G3 rifles, which were dumped along Jaldesa-Shurr Road in a thicket. The operation to recover the illicit firearms is ongoing, according to County Commissioner Evans Achoki.
Four suspects, including a politician, an assistant chief, a retired chief, and a driver, are in custody over the incident. Police spokesman Charles Owino said, “A multiagency operation to pursue the criminals and recover illicit arms in their possession is still on and we are urging the public within the area who are in unlawful possession of firearms to surrender them to lawful authority with immediate effect.”
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has vowed to crack down on politicians who fuel attacks, and a new border patrol unit will be established in the area to maintain law and order.
