On November 11, 2019, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Jkuat) was closed indefinitely due to student unrest over insecurity concerns.
The closure followed a protest staged by students on Monday after a student was stabbed by a gang on his way to the hostel at the main campus in Juja, Kiambu County.
According to a statement by Prof Robert Kinyua, the acting deputy vice-chancellor, the university's senate resolved to close the institution until further notice.
Prof Kinyua's statement read: 'In a special meeting of senate held today, Monday 11th November, 2019 at 10am, it was resolved that the university closes until further notice. Consequently, all students are directed to clear from the main campus, Juja by 12 midday today.'
Dr Hindzano Ngonyo, Jkuat's chief corporate communications officer, confirmed that the closure was related to insecurity incidents at the institution.
