On November 11, 2019, the government dismissed allegations that chemicals used in the Chemistry practicals during the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations were poisonous.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers had expressed concerns over the use of Xylene and Bromine, terming them as dangerous chemicals.

Education Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang inspected the ongoing exams in Milimani and Naivasha Girls Secondary schools in Naivasha and denied the claims, stating that the chemicals used were the same ones used during class time.

Dr. Kipsang also announced that the government was investigating reports of ten students from Milimani High school who failed to sit for the exams despite having registered.

He assured the public that the chemistry practicals were safe and that reports of teachers and students being affected by inhaling poisonous chemicals were unfounded.
