On November 10, 2019, Marseille secured a 2-1 victory over Lyon in a highly charged derby match, marked by ugly scenes off the pitch.
The game was marred by the behavior of a record home crowd of 65,421, who attacked the Lyon bus with stones, bottles, and other projectiles before the match.
Visiting players were repeatedly bombarded with objects thrown from the crowd while taking corners during the match, with Lyon's team coach left with two shattered windows.
"We were bombarded with stones, bottles, and other projectiles. It's a disgrace, it's just sick," an unidentified passenger of the bus was quoted as saying by regional newspaper La Provence.
Despite the chaos, Marseille's Dimitri Payet scored twice, including a penalty, to secure the win for his team, who moved second in the Ligue 1 table.
Lyon's Moussa Dembele scored a consolation goal in the 59th minute, but Marseille held on to secure the win.
"It's a night to enjoy," said Marseille boss Andre Villas-Boas. "Payet was very motivated, he had a great match.
"I hope it will continue. We had a great desire to win the game. We felt that, and we had talked about that desire this week."
