On Sunday, a devastating incident occurred at St John Catholic church in Kutus, Kirinyaga County, when a 26-year-old man identified as Dennis Bundi took his own life inside the church compound.
According to eyewitnesses, Bundi hanged himself from a tree within the compound, and his body was discovered by worshipers during a Sunday mass.
Church chairman Michael Gichinga confirmed the identity of the deceased and expressed shock, stating that he was not aware of any reason that could have driven Bundi to commit suicide.
Police from Wang'uru Police Station arrived at the scene to retrieve the body, and the service was allowed to continue thereafter.
This tragic incident comes on the heels of two other suicides in the area over the past weekend, with two men - 40-year-old Simon Kinyua and 32-year-old Daniel Mwaniki - taking their own lives in separate incidents on Friday.
According to Kutus Chief Nancy Gichuki, Kinyua was a member of a robbery gang who turned to suicide after a fellow gang member was gunned down in Thika.
Mwaniki, on the other hand, opted for death after a domestic squabble at his home.
Residents are expressing worry over the frequency of suicides witnessed in the area, and authorities are yet to comment on the recent spate of tragic deaths.
