On November 11, 2019, the Nairobi County Assembly witnessed a significant shake-up in its leadership, with Majority Leader Abdi Guyo and majority whip Waithera Chege being ousted from their positions.
The move, which has been met with resistance from the ousted leaders, has set the stage for a showdown between the new leadership and the outgoing leaders.
According to sources, the new leadership, led by Speaker Beatrice Elachi, has endorsed the changes, stating that the process was legal and in line with the one done in the Senate during the ouster of Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula.
“The changes are official because they have already been tabled on the floor of the house. However, if there is any issue the members should take it up with the party,” said Ms Elachi.
The new leadership has promised to herald an all-inclusive leadership style, focusing on an open-door policy. However, the ousted leaders have rubbished the changes, vowing to stay put.
Mr. Guyo has slammed the changes, stating that no law was followed in the alleged changes, and that such changes can only be done by following Standing Order 20 of the County Assembly or Article 19 of Jubilee Party constitution.
