Prof George Magoha's tenure at the Education ministry began in March with a promise to overhaul the university sector, citing duplication of courses, tribalism, and poor teaching methods as major issues.
However, nearly a year later, little progress has been made, and the momentum for change has stalled.
As the vice-chancellor of the University of Nairobi for 10 years, Prof Magoha is well-equipped to lead the reform effort, but he must push the agenda forward.
Universities are the backbone of academic excellence, providing students with the skills to compete in a global market.
But to achieve this, they must be run professionally, maintain high academic standards, and focus on knowledge creation and dissemination.
Prof Magoha has the support of the public and the government to drive meaningful change, but it's time for action, not just words.
