On November 10, 2019, Kenyan Wallstreet published an article explaining the basics of bond investment.

Bond investment involves lending money to companies or governments for a specific period, typically in exchange for regular interest payments and the return of the principal amount upon maturity.

For instance, an investor might purchase a 10-year, $10,000 bond with a 3% interest rate, receiving periodic interest payments and the principal amount after 10 years.

Types of Bonds

  • Corporate bonds are issued by companies to raise capital for business operations, often offering higher interest rates but with tax implications.
  • Municipal bonds are used by local governments to finance public projects, typically offering lower interest rates.
  • Treasury bonds are issued by governments, often with longer maturity periods and considered virtually risk-free but with lower interest rates.

Assessing Bond Investments

When evaluating bond investments, it's essential to consider the bond ratings, which measure the financial strength of the issuer.

Standard & Poor's, Moody's, and Fitch are the three major bond rating agencies, using a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols to indicate creditworthiness.

A higher bond rating indicates a safer investment, but highly-rated bonds often offer lower interest rates due to reduced risk.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Bond Investment

  • Advantages: Bonds are relatively safe, offer predictable income, and provide an opportunity to invest in communities.
  • Disadvantages: Bond investments require locking money away for extended periods, carry some risk of default, offer relatively low returns, and may involve higher broker fees due to market transparency issues.
