On November 10, 2019, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) took a bold step to protect Kenyan consumers by declaring five maize flour brands unsafe for human consumption.
The affected brands, Jembe, Dola, Kifaru, Starehe, and 210, were found to have high levels of aflatoxin, exceeding the maximum limit allowed.
KEBS instructed the affected mills to stop further manufacture and sale of the blacklisted products until corrective measures on quality are put in place and certified by the regulator.
The move has sparked a heated debate on social media, with some Kenyans praising the government's decision to protect consumers, while others believe it's a strategic move to hike flour prices or sabotage businesses.
