On November 9, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) blacklisted five maize flour brands in the Kenyan market, citing high levels of aflatoxins.
The affected brands, including Jembe, Dola, Kifaru, Starehe, and 210, were found to have aflatoxin levels above the maximum limit allowed.
While some Kenyans welcomed the move, others criticized the regulator for the ban, accusing it of sabotage and hiking flour prices.
Others questioned the regulator's role in authorizing the products for sale before recalling them.
As a result, the affected mills have been instructed to stop further manufacture and sale of the blacklisted products until corrective measures on quality are put in place and certified by KEBS.
