Published on November 10, 2019, by Caroline Njung'E, a writer for the Daily Nation, this article highlights the dangers of having a short memory.
Just like a relative who vows to quit drinking after a night of overindulgence, only to return to his old habits the following week, the Kenyan voter has a short memory that prevents them from learning from past mistakes.
As a result, the same politicians who have failed the country time and time again are re-elected, leaving the nation in a sorry state.
Another example of the dangers of a short memory is the case of Peninah Wangechi, who forgave her husband after he stabbed her 17 times. If only she had a long memory, she would have known to avoid him after he threatened to kill her.
Having a long memory like an elephant would allow us to learn from our mistakes and make better decisions. We would not tolerate being mistreated by the same person twice, and we would hold our leaders accountable for their actions.
It's time for Kenyans to develop a long memory and make informed decisions that will improve their lives and the lives of those around them.
