On November 8, 2019, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) proposed a significant increase in the fee to apply for U.S. citizenship, from $640 to $1,170, an 85% hike.
The proposed rule, which was sent to the Federal Register on Friday, also introduces a new fee for asylum applications, set at $50.
According to the proposed rule, the agency is primarily dependent on application fees and is required by law to conduct fee reviews and recommend adjustments every two years.
USCIS plans to transfer $200 million to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), another agency within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
