Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has identified several maize flour brands that contain high levels of aflatoxin, a toxin produced by certain fungi that can cause liver cancer.
According to KEBS, the affected brands include Dola maize flour produced by Kitui Flour Mills, Kifaru by Alpha Grain Limited, Starehe by Pan African Grain Millers, Two Ten by Kenblest Limited, and Jembe by Kensalrise Limited.
KEBS has directed the manufacturers to recall the products from the market and institute corrective measures. The agency has also suspended the permits of the manufacturers and instructed supermarkets to withdraw the affected brands from their shelves.
Consumers are advised to report any product suspected to be below the standards to KEBS. The agency has warned that aflatoxin can cause liver cancer and other health complications.
KEBS has been proactive in ensuring the quality of food products in Kenya. In November 2019, the agency suspended seven peanut butter brands due to high aflatoxin levels.
It is essential for consumers to be aware of the risks associated with consuming contaminated food products and to take necessary precautions to protect their health.
