Algeria's presidential election has been marked by months of street protests demanding a complete overhaul of the country's political system.

On November 9, 2019, Kamel Feniche, head of the constitutional council, confirmed that only five of the 23 registered candidates had been selected to run in the election.

Among the cleared candidates are two prominent figures from the Bouteflika era: Ali Benflis and Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Benflis, 75, served as prime minister under Bouteflika from 2000 to 2003 and ran against him in the 2004 and 2014 elections.

Tebboune, 73, was a senior civil servant and served as Bouteflika's communications minister when he came to power in 1999.

The election, originally planned for July, was postponed due to a lack of viable candidates.
