On November 9, 2019, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) took a crucial step to protect consumers by banning five maize flour brands in Kenya.

The banned brands include Dola, Jembe, 210, Kifaru, and Starehe maize flours, which were found to have high aflatoxin levels.

According to Kebs, the ban was a result of market surveillance and multiple reports from the public, highlighting the importance of public vigilance in ensuring food safety.

Kebs has suspended the permits of the manufacturers and instructed them to discontinue producing or selling the affected maize meal products.

Additionally, Kebs warned that substandard products found on sale will be seized for destruction at the expense of the owner, and the owners will face legal consequences.

The manufacturers are required to recall all substandard products and institute corrective actions before Kebs will confirm that standards have been met and lift the ban.
