On Friday, police intercepted a large consignment of counterfeit excise stamps worth Sh750 million at the Lwakhakha border, where they were being smuggled into the country from Uganda.
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) commissioner for Customs and Border Control, Kevin Safari, confirmed the interception, stating that the stamps were hidden in a white truck whose driver managed to escape after it was stopped by police officers working with KRA officers.
As of the time of the statement, a total of 146 rolls of stamps had been counted, with the exercise still ongoing.
According to KRA, the counterfeit stamps are part of a larger scheme to evade taxes, with the stamps being distributed through a local cartel to alcohol manufacturers and distributors.
Earlier in September, KRA officers had arrested a woman suspected of being a peddler of fake excise revenue stamps at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), who was detained upon arrival from China.
