On the evening of Thursday, November 7, 2019, Deputy President William Ruto cancelled a meeting at his Karen residence that was scheduled to discuss the recently concluded Kibra by-election.

The meeting was meant to be a post-mortem analysis of the election, where Ruto's Jubilee Party candidate, McDonald Mariga, came in second with 11,280 votes, behind ODM's Bernard Okoth who garnered 24,636 votes.

According to sources, the plan was for Ruto's team to 'supervise the polls' and then move to his residence for the analysis, but he cancelled on them in disappointment.

Despite the loss, Ruto attempted to downplay it by tweeting, 'Pongezi (congratulations) Benard Okoth for Kibra. Congrats Mariga, Team Jubilee & supporters for daring the so called 'bedroom', braving the chaos/violence to double our vote from 12 per cent (2017) to 26 per cent now. Our competitors came down 78 per cent (2017) to 52 per cent. They retained the seat we have served notice.'
