On November 9, 2019, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i issued a stern warning to leaders in Marsabit County, cautioning them to take immediate action against bandits responsible for the killing of 13 people, including three police officers.
Dr. Matiang'i gave the leaders 24 hours to locate the bandits and surrender their illegal firearms, which were allegedly used in the murders. He hinted at a possible overhaul of the security team in the area, stating that the government wants to create a renewed and synergized buffer zone at the volatile border.
According to Matiang'i, the attackers are well-known to some leaders, and he emphasized that no one can cause such trouble without being recognized. He also announced plans to reorganize deployment in Marsabit, with policemen from the Rapid Deployment Unit being deployed to the area.
Additionally, the government plans to establish border patrol units at the Ethiopian border in Fulore to ensure the safety of the people. Matiang'i's warning comes as the government seeks to address the security concerns in the region.
