Published on November 8, 2019, a lobby group in Mombasa is demanding that the Mama Ngina Waterfront Park be renamed.

The Okoa Mombasa Coalition presented a petition to the Mombasa County Assembly, arguing that the park's redevelopment lacked public participation.

According to the coalition, the park's name should reflect the historical and cultural heritage of Mombasa, and they propose renaming it after Mekatilili, one of Kenya's first freedom fighters.

Former chair of the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission Yash Pal Ghai is a notable member of the lobby group.

He and his counterparts believe that renaming the park would enable Mombasa to honor one of the country's unsung heroes and exercise local participation for local resources.

The petition was presented to the Mombasa County Assembly Clerk Salim Juma, who assured the group that the document would be taken through due process at the County Assembly.
