On November 8, 2019, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i issued a stern warning to illegal firearm holders in Marsabit County, giving them 24 hours to surrender their guns or face forceful disarmament.
The warning came after two separate attacks in the county left 10 people dead, including two police officers.
The first attack occurred in Kukuto area, where three people were killed by armed bandits who ambushed their vehicle.
Seven people, including two police officers, were killed in the second incident in Jardesa.
Speaking at the burial of former Kisii Bottlers Manager Absolom Nyang'au Moseti in Borabu Constituency, Nyamira County, Dr. Matiang'i said, 'They killed our officers. We cannot allow this to continue.'
Marsabit, which borders Ethiopia, has experienced incidents of insecurity, with national government administrators being the targets.
Following the attack, the government deployed more security officers in the county, and Marsabit leaders, led by Governor Ali Mohamud Mohamed, condemned the attack and urged the government to address the rampant insecurity in the county.
They pleaded with President Uhuru Kenyatta and CS Matiang'i to come to the rescue of Marsabit's people.
