On November 8, 2019, Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho revealed that he had spent the last five days at a hospital in Mombasa, Kenya.
Speaking from Mombasa Hospital, Joho expressed hope that he would be released soon, attributing his optimism to the positive results of the Kibra by-election.
"I have been watching this TV, and I pray that God will say I can leave here, let us go," Joho said, expressing his gratitude for the support he had received.
Although Joho did not disclose the nature of his illness, his Communications Director Richard Chacha had earlier indicated that it was likely malaria.
During his hospital visit, Joho congratulated Imran Okoth on his victory in the Kibra by-election, stating that the results had given him strength and improved his mood.
He also took a swipe at Deputy President William Ruto, criticizing his remarks about the bedroom.
"We knew it was going to go that way... Those others never knew that before you get into the bedroom, you have to pass through a gate, the living room, and many other doors before you get to the bedroom," Joho said.
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who had paid Joho a courtesy call, wished him a speedy recovery and expressed hope to see him in Nigeria soon.
