On November 8, 2019, the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Boss George Kinoti announced the acquisition of new equipment from the Government of Germany to boost the war against crime.
The German Government, through the German Cooperation and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, led by German Ambassador to Kenya Ms. Annett Günther, handed over the equipment to the DCI.
According to a tweet by the DCI, the equipment included Universal Forensic Extraction Devices (UFED), FRED Digital Forensic Workstations, Assorted Office Furniture, Laptops & Desktop Computers, among other items.
The UFED devices can access passwords and gain physical access from mobile phones, smartphones, tablets, and other devices even if deleted.
The FRED device helps in the collection and recovery of evidence.
The equipment was donated in accordance with a pact signed between the two governments in 2018, December 7, to work together on matters of security and intelligence for development and growth.
On the same day, President Uhuru Kenyatta signed the Data Protection Bill 2019 into law, which outlines key principles for the protection of personal data generated by both public and private institutions.
