Ruto Allies Dare Uhuru, Raila to Referendum Duel ¶
Deputy President William Ruto's allies have vowed to scuttle a proposed referendum, which they claim is driven by selfish political interests.
Speaking to the press, Soy MP Caleb Kositany said, 'We don't fear a referendum at all. Let them bring it on.' He added that at the end of the day, they will respect the decision of the majority of Kenyans.
Other Ruto allies, including Kandara's Alice Wahome and Kapseret's Oscar Sudi, have also come out strongly against the proposed referendum.
Wahome claimed that Kenyans who voted for Uhuru and Ruto in 2017 are intact and would reject the plebiscite, despite Uhuru joining 'the official opposition.'
She stated, 'We haven't crossed over and we haven't changed our minds. We keep promises.'
Wahome also accused President Kenyatta and Raila of hatching a plot to destroy Ruto's 2022 presidential ambitions.
On the other hand, the DP's political gadfly and foot soldier Aden Duale has tactfully changed his tune. He now says to all and sundry he supports a parliamentary system.
However, the odds are likely to work against Ruto since the country's political bigwigs have closed ranks to support constitutional change.
President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition chief Raila Odinga have been joined by political heavyweights Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi, Moses Wetang'ula, Gideon Moi, and Isaac Rutto in supporting the proposed referendum.
