On November 8, 2019, Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho was admitted to Mombasa Hospital, according to his communications director Richard Chacha.

The governor had been absent from the last leg of the Kibra MP seat campaigns, but his health improved dramatically after learning of ODM's victory in the by-election.

"Once I heard that we won in Kibra, my strength improved all of a sudden," Joho said from his hospital bed.

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo visited Joho at the hospital on Friday, November 8, 2019, while in the country to attend a Cities Development Forum at Vipingo, Kilifi county.

Politicians from Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale flocked to the hospital to visit Joho, who fell sick on Thursday and was advised to be admitted for further check-up.
