On November 8, 2019, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced plans to establish a new edge location in Nairobi, Kenya, further expanding its presence in Africa.
Located in major cities worldwide, edge locations are collections of physical servers within data centers that enable content distribution and reduce latency for end-users.
The new Nairobi location will be Amazon's third in Africa, following existing sites in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa.
During a meeting with Amazon executives, including Teresa Carlson, Vice President of Worldwide Public Sector, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta discussed the company's plans and the growing importance of data protection in Kenya.
Notably, President Kenyatta had recently signed the Data Protection Bill 2019 into law, outlining requirements for the protection of personal data processed by both public and private organizations.
