On November 8, 2019, the Treasury released the Judiciary's recurrent and development budget, bringing relief to the Judiciary after a period of financial uncertainty.
Chief Justice David Maraga had previously expressed concerns that the Treasury was starving the Judiciary of funds, threatening to cripple court operations.
Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi announced the release of the funds, stating that the Judiciary's recurrent and development budget for the 2019/20 financial year had been restored and uploaded in the Integrated Financial Management System (IFMIS) as approved by the National Assembly.
Authority to incur expenditure for court stations and tribunals is being processed and will be issued in the shortest time possible, allowing the implementation of approved activities for the 2019/20 work plans to proceed as planned.
The release of the funds comes after Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani proposed drastic budgetary cuts of up to 50 per cent on the Judiciary's recurring and development budget last month.
