On October 30th, 2019, Hussein Mohammed bid farewell to his viewers on Citizen TV, but behind the scenes, a brewing power struggle had led to his departure.
According to sources, the tension between the 'old' and 'new' teams of employees at Royal Media Services had been building for months.
The 'new' team, comprising journalists who joined between March and July 2018, including Joe Ageyo, Linus Kaikai, Yvonne Okwara, and others, were seen as the 'dream team' brought in to take the media house to the next level.
However, this perceived elevation created tension with the 'old' team, who felt undervalued and bullied by their newer colleagues.
Insiders revealed that the newcomers were given higher salaries, with some earning up to double what their peers at RMS got, creating an unequal salary scale that left a bad taste in the mouths of the old camp.
On his last day, Hussein threw hints on who were his friends and not-so-good colleagues, deliberately leaving out his immediate bosses, Joy Ageyo and Kaikai.
As he bid farewell to his viewers, he expressed gratitude to RMS Chair S.K. Macharia and Vice-Chair Gathoni Macharia, but made no mention of his immediate superiors.
