Macron's NATO Warning: 'Brain Death' Due to Trump's Leadership ¶
French President Emmanuel Macron has sparked controversy by stating that NATO is experiencing 'brain death' due to a lack of strategic coordination and leadership from the United States, particularly under President Trump.
Speaking in an interview with The Economist published on November 7, 2019, Macron expressed his concerns about the alliance's future, citing the United States' withdrawal from northeastern Syria without notice and the lack of coordination between the US and its NATO allies.
Macron's comments were met with a sharp response from Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, who disagreed with his assessment, stating that NATO remains vital to European security.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo defended NATO, praising its importance in European security and its role in the collapse of the Iron Curtain. He also defended President Trump's demands for NATO allies to increase their military spending to 2 percent of their gross domestic product.
Foreign Minister Heiko Maas of Germany also rejected Macron's characterization of NATO as 'brain dead,' stating that he firmly believes in international cooperation.
The controversy surrounding Macron's comments is set to overshadow the NATO summit in London on December 3 and 4, which marks the alliance's 70th anniversary.
