Reaching 100 Million People with Home Solar ¶
On November 8, 2019, d.light Solar, a clean energy solutions provider, announced its plans to reach 100 million people with home solar by 2020.
The company has received Sh1.9 billion from a consortium of lenders to continue its social impact mission of transforming lives through cleaner, safer, and reliable energy.
d.light Solar's managing director for Kenya and Horn of Africa, Michael Walekwa, spoke to The Business Daily about the company's journey in the clean energy space and its expansion plans in other African markets.
According to Walekwa, the company's focus is on providing families in rural communities without access to reliable electricity with the latest renewable energy technology.
d.light Solar has been working in Kenya for the past 12 years, helping families to discard kerosene and other harmful and unreliable sources of power.
The company has positively impacted over 10,000 families in Kenya, providing them with access to off-grid solar energy and transforming their lives in various ways.
Walekwa noted that the company's growth in Kenya and other African markets is driven by the thriving economy, advances in technology, and the supportive M-Pesa platform.
d.light Solar has partner offices in Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Ethiopia, and plans to expand its operations across Africa and strengthen its technology capabilities with the $18 million investment from impact investors.
The company's goal is to ensure universal access to energy for each household, and to play a part in connecting all people, regardless of status, and reducing disparities in energy and income inequalities.
