On November 8, 2019, the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) called on mobile network operators to improve the quality of service in areas with challenging topography, such as mountains and valleys.

Speaking at the 18th ICT Consumer Forum in Nyandarua County, CA's acting Director-General, Mercy Wanjau, noted that despite a high mobile penetration rate of 109.2% in Kenya, the quality of voice and data services remains a significant challenge for consumers.

The forum highlighted Nyandarua County as one of the regions where the topography affects the services offered by mobile operators, resulting in dropped voice calls, poor internet connections, and weak signals.

Despite 99.7% of the county's population being covered by 2G and 66.1% by 3G, serving 61.5% of the population that owns mobile phones, residents continue to experience poor service.

Ms. Wanjau emphasized that the quality of service is a priority for the CA, and the authority is working to ensure that licensed telecommunications operators provide good quality services, as mandated by Section 23 of the Kenya Communications Act, 1998.

Francis Kememia, Governor of Nyandarua County, noted that the county is committed to promoting faster adoption of ICT and improved network connectivity, which will enable residents to effectively leverage on ICT and boost their socio-economic development.
