Published on November 8, 2019
Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa is facing allegations of embezzling Ksh. 57.7 million in public funds, with her children and several others implicated in the scandal.
According to a report by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Jumwa's two children, through their company Kaseru Constructions Limited, allegedly received Ksh. 64.7 million from Kilifi County between March 2014 and August 2018.
One of the transactions saw Jumwa receive Ksh. 3 million after Ksh. 9.5 million was allegedly paid out to Kaseru Construction Ltd. Her Likoni counterpart Mishi Juma Hamisi also received Ksh. 3 million, according to the DCI report.
Withdrawals from a Cooperative Bank account operated by Jumwa's son Karisa, totaling Ksh. 46.1 million, are also under investigation. The bank account was allegedly used to transfer Ksh. 5 million to Likoni MP Hamisi, Ksh. 15.2 million to Jumwa, and Ksh. 40.7 million to Jumwa's daughter.
Another company, Gadu Stores, which was allegedly contracted to supply ECD furniture to Kilifi County, is also listed in the DCI report. The company is said to be run by Jumwa's son and received Ksh. 30 million from the county in their Equity bank account. Ksh. 4.02 million was then allegedly transferred to Jumwa via RGTS.
The DCI now wants Jumwa and 10 others prosecuted for abuse of office, money laundering, failing to adhere to procurement procedures, bid rigging, conspiracy to commit an offense, and fraudulent acquisition of public property.
