On November 8, 2019, Sanlam Kenya announced the appointment of Caroline Laichena as the substantive chief executive officer of its general insurance subsidiary.
Laichena's appointment comes after a 10-month acting stint from January, following the departure of George Kuria who quit to pursue other interests.
Sanlam Kenya Group chief executive Patrick Tumbo praised Laichena's credentials, saying they stood out during a competitive recruitment process.
Laichena brings a wealth of experience in the insurance industry, having served in various positions, including at Jubilee Insurance, Cannon Assurance, and Heritage Insurance.
Her appointment comes at a critical time for Sanlam Kenya, which is recovering from a series of bad investment decisions that led to a Sh1.5 billion net loss last year.
The insurer is also undergoing business reforms and has recently laid off tens of its employees, joining a growing list of companies that have turned to job cuts to protect profit margins or stay afloat.
