Kibra By-Election: ODM's Imran Okoth Takes Early Lead ¶
November 7, 2019, 8:01 PM - Kibra by-election results started streaming in shortly after polling stations closed at 5:30 PM on Thursday, November 7.
ODM's Imran Okoth and Jubilee's McDonald Mariga are the front-runners to clinch the parliamentary seat left vacant after the death of former MP Ken Okoth.
The by-election kicked off at 6 AM with several reported cases of chaos in the constituency.
Three people were arrested after they were allegedly found bribing voters.
Jubilee and ODM leaders traded barbs, accusing each other of electoral malpractices, including voter bribery.
Notable voters, including Raila Odinga, Imran Okoth, and ANC's Eliud Owalo, cast their votes in the hotly contested by-election.
Only the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is mandated to declare final results.
Unofficial results started trickling in, with Stream 6 Lindi Mosque polling stations showing McDonald Mariga with 45 votes, Bernad Okoth with 119 votes, Eliud Owalo with 32 votes, and Khamisi Butichi with 4 votes.
Results from polling stations started arriving at the IEBC tallying centre, where Opposition leader Raila Odinga, Siaya Senator James Orango, and Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua were present.
Official IEBC results started streaming in, with 24 out of 183 polling stations showing Imran Okoth with 3016 votes, McDonald Mariga with 1114 votes, Eliud Owalo with 630 votes, Khamisi Butichi with 29 votes, and Editar Ochieng' with 10 votes.
McDonald Mariga conceded defeat, calling Imran Okoth to congratulate him on his win and promising to work closely with him for the best interest of the residents of Kibra.
IEBC official results showed 71 out of 183 polling stations, with Imran Okoth leading with 10,657 votes, McDonald Mariga with 3,308 votes, Eliud Owalo with 2,014 votes, and Khamisi Butichi with 89 votes.
