On November 7, 2019, chaos erupted in Kibra during the by-election as Jubilee Party candidate McDonald Mariga was chased out of Mayani polling station by locals.

Mariga, who was touring various polling stations to check on the voting process, was forced to flee in his vehicle after being confronted by angry residents.

Police responded by firing in the air, although it is unclear what warranted the reaction, as the situation did not appear to be particularly tense.

A video seen by Citizen Digital shows people yelling at Mariga to leave before gunshots are heard.
