On November 7, 2019, the National Treasury restored the Judiciary's recurrent and development budget for the year 2019/2020 following a court ruling.
The decision was made after the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) won a case in the High Court, with Justice James Makau ordering the Treasury to halt budget cuts on the Judiciary.
Earlier, the Treasury had slashed the Judiciary's recurrent and development budget by 50%, citing the need to cut costs.
However, the court ruling has guaranteed continuity in operations of some tribunals and stations that had shut down due to the budget cuts.
A letter from the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Anne A. Amadi, confirmed the reinstatement of the budget, stating, 'We wish to confirm that the National Treasury has restored the Judiciary Recurrent and Development Budget for FY 2019/2020.'
Additionally, an internal memo stamped November 7, 2019, acknowledged that implementation of work plans should proceed as planned, with the budget for the half-year uploaded in IFMIS as per approvals by the National Assembly.
