On August 24th, 2019, Kenya's population stood at approximately 47.6 million people, according to the National Population and Housing Census 2019 provisional results.
Director-General of the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) Zachary Mwangi has urged the media to report these results objectively, citing the census's 99% accuracy and the use of modern digital technology in the enumeration process.
"This success is attributed to the dedication and hard work by all Census personnel, cooperation by the public, and the use of modern digital technology during the entire census process," Mwangi said.
He added that the effective use of digital technology ensured the speed of data processing and data security, contributing to the short time within which the census results were released.
According to Mwangi, the numbers released reflect the Kenya population as at August 24th, 2019, and are based on administrative boundaries, which may not necessarily align with political boundaries.
KNBS is developing further publications from the census results, including population numbers up to sublocation level, which will be released by February 2020. By August 2020, the Bureau will generate census data by fertility rate, mortality rate, and migration.
