Chemotherapy, a cornerstone of cancer treatment, can have a range of side effects that impact patients differently. According to a 2019 article, managing these side effects is crucial for a patient's well-being.

One of the most common side effects of chemotherapy is nausea, which can be accompanied by vomiting. To alleviate this, patients are often prescribed medication to prevent nausea and vomiting. In addition, there are several home remedies that can help:

  • Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day to avoid an empty stomach.
  • Chew food slowly and thoroughly.
  • Avoid hot or spicy foods, and opt for room temperature meals instead.
  • Drink liquids slowly and avoid mixing hot and cold foods.

Dehydration is another potential side effect of chemotherapy, particularly when accompanied by diarrhea and vomiting. To prevent dehydration, patients should drink plenty of fluids and healthy juices. In severe cases, intravenous fluids may be necessary.

Loss of appetite is also a common side effect of chemotherapy, which can lead to malnutrition and weakness. To combat this, patients can try eating small, frequent meals throughout the day, focusing on nutrient-rich foods like fish, eggs, and pudding.

Mouth sores are another common side effect of chemotherapy, which can make eating and drinking difficult. To manage mouth sores, patients should follow their doctor's instructions for mouth care, including brushing teeth with a soft toothbrush and gargling with a salt and baking soda solution.
