On Wednesday, Manchester City missed the chance to qualify for the Champions League last 16 after being held to a 1-1 draw by Atalanta at the San Siro.

Ederson, the Brazilian goalkeeper, was replaced at half-time due to a muscle problem, and substitute Claudio Bravo was sent off in the final 10 minutes.

City had taken an early lead with Raheem Sterling's goal on seven minutes, but Atalanta equalized four minutes after the break through Mario Pasalic's header.

Man City are top of Group C with 10 points from four games, with Shakhtar Donetsk and Dinamo Zagreb both on five.

The match ended in drama when Bravo was given a straight red card for bringing down Josip Ilicic nine minutes from time.

After a period of confusion, Pep Guardiola substituted Riyad Mahrez and replaced Bravo with Kyle Walker, who took on the role of goalkeeper.

Walker just about kept out Ruslan Malinovsky's effort from the resulting free-kick, but Atalanta failed to capitalize in the closing stages.

"There were 10 minutes to go and we could think the worst," said City coach Guardiola. "Kyle Walker was suggested because of his courage and he's quick. Congratulations to him for helping the team and going in this position."

Guardiola praised Walker's bravery and quick thinking, saying the team reacted well to the situation, with only one shot against them after Bravo's red card.

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini acknowledged the difficulty of playing against Manchester City, saying the turning point of the match was when City missed a penalty.

"It's tough to cause problems for Manchester City," Gasperini said. "We struggled until they missed the penalty. In the end, we were hoping to win the match. I don't think the minutes added on at the end reflected how much time the match was stopped for."

Atalanta still has a chance to qualify, but they must win against Dinamo Zagreb to do so.
