On November 6, 2019, the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court in Nairobi handed down a two-year jail term to a former bodyguard of Migori Governor Okoth Obado. Alternatively, the suspect, Moses Marandwi, can pay a fine of Kshs. 500,000.
Marandwi, a police officer, was found guilty of personation. He had used academic certificates belonging to Mr. John Chacha Nyamohanga, a Kenya Defence Officer (KDF).
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption (EACC) offices received a complaint on July 13, 2016, alleging that two public officers, John Chacha Nyamohanga and Moses Marandwi, were sharing school certificates originally belonging to one of them.
Investigations by EACC established that John Chacha Nyamohanga (alias Moses Marandwi) had personated and used a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education certificate belonging to John Chacha Nyamohanga, a KDF officer, to secure employment as an Administration Police officer in 2006.
As a result, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution recommended the prosecution of the police officer for the offence of Personation of a person named in a certificate contrary to Section 384 of the Penal Code. The EACC is also pursuing the recovery of the salary irregularly earned from 2006 to date by the police officer.
Meanwhile, the case against Governor Obado, who is charged with the gruesome murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno, is set to be heard on December 2 and 3, 2019. Forty-two witnesses have been lined up to testify against the governor, who is charged alongside his personal assistant Michael Oyamo and Casper Obiero, a clerk in Migori County.
